Barker-Mill Estates understands the importance of being able to live and grow within the same community. Through its efforts, Barker-Mill Estates endeavours to deliver homes so that people can remain close to their families and enjoy all the things they are used to in the community in which they grew up in.

Housing partnerships 

To be able to assist in meeting local housing needs, over the years, Barker-Mill Estates has partnered with a number of developers to deliver much needed homes across Hampshire. These partners include the likes of Bloor Homes and Bargate Homes with whom Barker-Mill Estates is delivering in the region of 350 homes for the local area:

Fen Meadow

A 27-acre site in Nursling owned by Barker-Mill Estates was used to deliver much-needed new homes to the area, together with Bloor Homes, Barker-Mill Estates supported the delivery of Fen Meadow, a development which has set a high benchmark for long-lasting and thoughtful residential design. The 326-home scheme which includes 50 affordable homes, is designed to accommodate a variety of lifestyles from downsizers, to first time buyers and growing families. As part of the project, over £2.5 million has supported the area’s recreation, school and community facilities, as well as improving the road network, extending cycleways and providing bus services.

Walnut Place

Bargate Homes also secured planning on Barker-Mill Estates land for its Walnut Place development which comprises 23, two, three and four bedroom homes and 1 bedroom apartments in Nursling. Bargate Homes contributed a total of £235,000 towards affordable housing, recreation facilities and infrastructure projects within the Test Valley Borough Council area.

Longdown Estate and Longdown Building

As well as its work with housebuilders, developers and local businesses, Barker-Mill Estates operates its very own building company, Longdown Building. Based in Ashurst, the company employs 12 full time staff with seasonal staff during busy periods, seven of which have been employed by the company for more than 15 years. A multi-skilled workforce, the team undertakes building work including concreting, bricklaying, roofing, plastering and carpentry. The Longdown Building team maintain the let houses and farm buildings on the Estate and regularly undertake new build works for “third parties” which have included the Girl Guides HQ in Lyndhurst, local Scout Groups, churches, parish councils as well as individual home owners.

Furthermore, with the Barker-Mill family having been local landowners in the community, more than 40 homes have been built to let to local people over the last 20 years.  The Estate and its management company have also let their land for pony grazing and farming to local farmers and rent facilities to local businesses offering a range of commercial/industrial space and offices longdown.uk.com
